What's this have to do with trains in coal country? A little detour today took us to the home of the original Rocket Boys made famous in Homer Hickman's book "October Sky."

Don't you just LOVE CPL signals!

Uh-oh!, What happened to the CPLS?????

80M (again) and his pushers.

Once more, 80M, climbing the 1.5% grade over the long bridge toward Summit and Tunnel #3.

12:29pm

We spent Saturday night at the Elkhorn Inn in Landgraff, WV which is a pretty neat place -- IF you like trains!

Happily, the shot at left refutes the rumor that the CPL was gone!

One major annoyance watching trains from the inn is all the obstructions! The road, poles, signs, trees, the ATCS antenna, and Railfans!

After spending the morning loafing at the Inn, we explored our way Eastward on the Pokey Main.

East of Bluefield on the Christiansburg District we found a bit of Autumn color (and a few trains).

I've always wanted to shoot something on this bridge over the Oakvale Fire Department but the opportunity has never presented itself. Today, alerted of an approaching train off the PD District we zipped over for the shot. Next time I'll have to ask if they can pose a fire truck for me!

Oakvale, WV

While waiting for a Westbound to pose by the Church in Oakvale, I was struck by the international flavour of the rails stacked nearby.

I have to admit I've never seen British Steel in the USA!

More than halfway home with a little daylight left we decided to catch what we could at the Montgomery Tunnel.

Kind of late in the day but not too bad, huh?
